remember your why
The 2024 pride & remembrance run theme is remember your why. We place equal importance on both pride and remembrance. We want runners to reflect on the significance and history of this run while they’re participating and training. The first pride & remembrance run was held in 1996, in remembrance of founder Alan Belaiche’s friend, Richard Robert Leroux, who died of AIDS.
We are proud of everything the 2SLGBTQ+ community has achieved since then. However, the remembrance aspect reminds us there is still work to be done. For all participants, we encourage you to remember your why while participating in the run.
This year’s theme colours also reflect the remember your why theme. The darker, sombre tones represent the history and struggles of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. The brighter colours represent celebrating the progress and diversity of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. The black and brown tones represent BIPOC intersectionality in the 2SLGBTQ+ community, as BIPOC 2SLGBTQ+ folks face further marginalization. Considering intersectionality, we have chosen beneficiaries that support marginalized communities. All the colours are all from the progress pride flag.
The crisscrossing shapes represent a city map. The uniqueness in shape and size of each portion of the tapestry represents the body diversity we celebrate in the pride & remembrance run. There are many ways to get involved. Whether you walk, run, sashay, cheer or volunteer, we are all here for a reason.
Remember your why!
